Substance Use Disorder in Women

Many studies have shown that women are much less likely to seek out treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. This is due to a number of important factors. Females in general face more negative stigma surrounding addiction and are prone to keep this problem to themselves.

Social and cultural pressures behind the “role of the female” contribute to women choosing to forgo treatment. Because of this, women fail to recognize the severity of their addiction and believe that they do not have a problem.

Other factors that hinder treatment among women are personal and professional commitments and responsibilities such as childcare and family household management. This role has traditionally fallen on the female. Making it the number one priority above self-care. Relationships, trauma and family situations also contribute to a woman’s decision to use substances as well as seek out treatment.

When it comes to biological factors, women are much more likely to develop an addiction to drugs and alcohol. Despite consuming substances in smaller amounts, women are more susceptible to addiction. This is because female bodies contain more fat and less water which is normally able to dilute alcohol and other substances.

Women are more likely to suffer from substance addiction side effects including liver damage, cancer and drug relapse. Ultimately, these unique factors that women face in addiction and treatment are addressed in gender-specific programs.

Rehab for Women: Levels of Care

There is no one size fits all when it comes to substance use disorder treatment. Women face unique challenges when addressing drug addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. At Hotel California by the Sea’s women’s rehab program, female clients received specialized treatment targeting their needs.

Our female clients are guided through every step of the rehab process from detoxification, to residential rehab and outpatient programs. Comprehensive treatment plans are created to address all aspects of addiction including the physical and psychological elements.

Medical Detox for Women

Upon initial intake, many female patients enter the first phase of treatment in medical detox. Detox consists of riding the body of any harmful and mind-altering substances. During this level of care, female patients are monitored 24/7.

Women are more prone to intense withdrawal symptoms. Treatments include Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and other forms of medication pain management to help with the discomfort. These treatment methods also help prevent further cravings and relapse, a common trait in female patients.

Residential Program for Women

In this level of care, female patients will be cared for in a structured environment. Under guided supervision, the program length can vary depending on the patient and their progress. In residential care, women reside in a home-like environment. Women can focus on the emotional and mental well-being of their health.

Our female rehab heavily focuses on treating trauma-related substance use disorders. Female patients can address the challenges they face with their trauma and addiction through various therapies such as CBT and DBT.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Women

Partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides our female patients with a supportive foundation as they prepare for life outside of rehab. During this transition, patients will learn how to manage outside stressors and triggers. Female patients are still in a vulnerable state. They will continue to receive intensive therapeutic treatments throughout the day in an outpatient facility.

At Hotel California by the Sea, our women’s rehab program also encourages patients to participate in addiction recovery support groups. Groups include Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and SMART recovery.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Women

Intensive outpatient program (IOP) for women, patients prepare for independent life. Patients and their clinical team will begin preparing to transition into life outside of a rehab environment. At our treatment center, we help our female patients create a plan of action on how to leave treatment.

In this level of care, patients spend less time in treatment therapies and more time participating in life skill-building activities. Outside activities such as family obligations, educational goals and career goals are explored. Our outpatient program also offers assistance through various social services such as family support services and locating sober transitional living.

Aftercare for Women

Aftercare for women is a carefully formulated plan to support patients through the rest of their recovery after leaving rehab. Aftercare plans can include participation in outside physical activities, addiction recovery support programs and educational and career assistance services. Patients are also encouraged to continue substance use disorder therapeutic treatments.

At Hotel California by the Sea, we offer an alumni program. The alumni program allows former clients and newly recovered patients to come together and share their experiences. In a group of like-minded peers, female patients receive support, encouragement and accountability.

Addiction can be a lonely place. Having a community of recovering peers makes it easier and more motivating to stay sober.

Evidenced-based approaches for Women’s Addiction Treatment

In our women’s rehab program in Washington, we treat every aspect of addiction. Getting to the root cause of addiction includes addressing all the psychological and emotional issues. Many female clients enter rehab with trauma and other co-occurring mental health conditions. Through various therapeutic treatments, clients will be able to work through the mental health issues associated with their addiction.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Women

In cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), female patients will learn how to recognize and change negative thought patterns into constructive behaviors. Patients learn to identify the unhelpful ways of thinking and how they can be reevaluated in a problem-solving situation. This type of talk therapy is beneficial for women who experience co-occurring conditions. Mental health conditions include anxiety, depression, eating disorders and trauma.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) for Women

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is a form of substance use disorder therapy that targets emotional dysregulation. DBT can be very beneficial for female clients. It is especially helpful for those suffering from personality disorders, bipolar disorder or other mental health conditions that affect cognitive stability.

DBT teaches patients to acknowledge and accept any distressing feelings associated with their addiction. After acceptance, patients learn how to make changes for a positive future and positive outcomes. Studies have shown that women are at higher risk for developing co-occurring mental health disorders. DBT helps provide women with the tools and resources to cope with overwhelming emotions and situations.

Family Therapy for Women

Family therapy for women allows female clients and their loved ones to discuss the addiction in a safe and unbiased environment. Open communication, sorting out differences and understanding the intricacies of the addiction are all issues touched on during family therapy. Substance use disorder treatments that integrate family therapy or family counseling result in a higher rate of recovery success. Having strong and stable support while you heal and recover from addiction often motivates female clients to maintain long-lasting sobriety.

Group Therapy for Women

In group therapy sessions, female clients are encouraged to share their struggles without fear of outside pressure or judgment. Group sessions at Hotel California by the Sea in Washington, are led by certified therapists and counselors. Within a community of like-minded peers, group therapy provides a safe space that eliminates the guilt and shame of addiction. This allows female patients to open up, be vulnerable and truly embrace substance use disorder treatment methods.

EDMR Therapy for Women

In eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR), female patients suffering from trauma-related addiction will find treatment highly beneficial. EMDR therapy consists of patients learning how to reprocess negative traumatic memories while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation. This helps reduce the intensity of the emotion associated with their addiction.

EMDR is a fairly new type of therapy used to treat substance abuse. EMDR has yielded great results within addiction therapy. It has continued to be used to treat female patients suffering from co-occurring mental health disorders.
